Well-researched, sharply-written, and empathetic to all the actors (almost all) in this uniquely American tragedy — Farwell, et al., bring into sharp focus the ineptitude of US bureaucracy (Army, State Department, CIA), the hyper-political realities, and the limitations of modern-day newsreporting that delayed the return of Bowe Bergdahl and used his desertion and capture to serve interests of the Army, News corporations, the CIA, etc., but not the Bergdahl family, active-duty soldiers, Bowe, or the nation.

Just got it in the mail and finished it in two sittings. Excellent journalism; a very interesting and enjoyable read about such a bizarre episode in American history. As well as it’s inportance and significance in our post 9/11 foreign policy.

Whatever you think you know about the Bergdahl story, and about Afghanistan, you'll learn what an extraordinary event his captivity was. The narrative is threaded with heroes, clowns, tragedies, and with the truth about the war.

As a veteran, I read this book and was horrified by the way Bergdahl was treated by the Army. This is an incredible story of the Obama Administration and the Trump Administration and how they used Bergdahl to pursue their own agendas. Read it, you will not be disappointed.

American Cipher tells the real story surrounding Bowe Bergdahl, going wider and deeper on a complex issue. This book made me reconsider the entire case.

Ames and Farwell painstakingly go back to that spring morning when Bergdahl walked off base and tell a dramatically different story than the half decade of fans news narratives. Bergdahl was an American soldier captured, exploited and brutally tortured by the Haqqanis for financial and personal leverage. At the same time the American media, government, military also brutally exploited Bergdahl's imprisonment for their own gain. While Bergdahl survived in a cage, the politics and incompetence of the Afghan war swirled around him. Finally used as a pawn to free Gitmo prisoners (who are now being used by Trump as "peace negotiators) he was brought back to an incredibly hostile America. How does a young soldier go from kidnapped hero to accused traitor? Well that is why this book is so satisfying. He did exactly what a young American soldier was expected to do. Survive Evade, Resist and Escape at great permanent. peril to his own health and mental welfare. I hope someday Bergdahl gets to confront the high profile Americans who so viciously betrayed and defamed him. There can never be justice for a young man who did one stupid thing and paid for it with five years of hell. And Fox news, Mark Boal and Serial. Shame on you.

Clear some time to read this book because it will be difficult to put it down! Farwell is an excellent writer but more importantly he gives this topic the "NPR treatment" as he takes a deep dive into the background of every individual and entity involved. Get ready to meet some interesting folks, hear their stories, and come away with a profound sense of the complexity of every aspect of this story and its subjects.
