Wow, the first couple of chapters had my nose glued to the screen. Then came all the booby traps set up by a woman who was, A. trying to exist with 4 little girls in a relative wilderness B. Escaping evil men lurking about. Sophisticated booby traps that would have taken several people years to set up. A dug out tunnel from the cellar to a cave. Porch floors with trap doors. (2 of them. One with spears sharpened by one of the children with a Bowie knife.) Two landslide traps with tree LOGS piled with huge stones. (Perfectly placed, of course, to take out the bad guys.) The heroine managed to dig and carry logs and stones with 4 small children (largely pregnant during the same time period.) I'm willing to go along with some discrepancies in the name of a good story, but come on. Not to mention that the hero and heroine had no development in a relationship. Just, boom strangers married, then boom Sophie's pregnant. I bordered on disliking both the hero and the heroine so many times. Their personalities battered back and forth like a metronome. Wise/stupid. Sweet/angry. Love/hate. I gave three stars because I hate leaving negative reviews, but the story was beyond believable. I loved the comedy at first, but it was way overdone.

This one is really hard to rate. When I first started reading it, I would have given it one star. It was depressing and I really struggled to keep up with who was who character wise. The book jumped around a lot and for the most part I was lost and frustrated. I set it aside for 24 hours and then decided to give it one more try. From there, the enjoyment picked up substantially. I really enjoyed the strong female lead character and her daughters. After giving the book a second chance, I found I could not put it down and stayed up most of the night reading. For a "Christian book", I was really bothered by the fact that it introduced a lost and lonely school teacher and then left her to fend for herself. Why even put her in the story-line, just to abandon her? Not very kind or "Christian", especially for a woman who knew what it was like to be scared and abandoned by everyone.So,1 star for intro to story-line and characters5 stars for humorMinus 1 star for abandoning the poor school teacherThus, I settled on a 4 star rating.

I think this book was meant to be historical romantic comedy, but apparently I don't share the author's sense of humor. It just struck me as...odd. We start the story with the slowest "flash flood" ever as the heroine saves a man that happens to look exactly like her dead husband. We have a series of misunderstanding based on people assuming things (like that the other person can read their mind) which are supposed to be funny. And we have running gags like a scarf that smells strongly of donkey. It's supposed to stink so bad that it drives men away from the heroine's house. Only, people living with horses would be so used to the smell that it won't bother them. I can only guess that the author is a city-living gal who thinks equines stink, because the gag just left this horse-loving farmer gal baffled. Anyway, not my type of humor so I struggled to a stop about a third of the way in and quit.

This book is written in deep point of view. The story is shown action by action with very little telling, so the reader experiences everything the characters do. And there is tons of non-stop action in this book. The characters are well-rounded with some likable and others detestable. I loved that Sophie was feisty and could take care of herself on the frontier . Plus she taught her girls how to survive as well. And the enjoyable parts for me were the smattering of humor and the touches of Christianity. Mrs. Connelly is a great writer and a terrific storyteller. I highly recommend this book.

I loved this book. The beginning was a bit puzzling 🤔 trying to figure out where the author was headed with these characters. One the characters identity and connections were explained, the story became more enjoyable. Trouble, fears, new relationships, lack of communication wove into a story with outlaws, revenge, and heroic females made for interesting reading. The interaction between mountain man turned Texas Ranger and four little girls is delightfully humorous.

I tried to like the "hero" in this book. I really did. I kept waiting for him to change and "get it". He didn't. He remained chauvinistic and annoying throughout the entire thing. And Sophie becomes a door mat. She's angry all right, but never actually stands up for herself. clay runs rough shod over her wishes, and then he immediately gets to decide that he's going to sleep with her. The kids even pander to his ego by lying to him about their abilities. And the worst part? He doesn't change. Somehow, because he is controlling out of love, it makes it ok. Ugh. Mary is a talented writer, but this storyline fell short for me.

As a great fan of Deanne Gist, Cathy Marie Hake, Tracie Peterson and Shelly Sheppard Gray to name a few great Christian authors, I wanted to branch out and try a different author as I had read all of their books ... After reading all of the reviews I was excited to read this series and purchased them all ... I still don't understand what is wrong with me as I just could not connect with the characters or the book as strongly as the other reviewers. In fact, I have been so disconnected that I have not even started the 2nd or the 3rd book in this series ... the other reviews are outstanding ... I cannot understand WHY I feel the way I do ... I was just disappointed when I was reading this book and felt the same when I finished it! I will give the other books a try at a later date, as I have to admit I have read other books that I have not been delighted with in a series that I have absolutely ADORED a second or a third book ... I, unfortunately, have not the history with the author at this time to want to continue reading this series immediately, I just feel I need some distance at this time. I am hoping I feel differently about them at a later time, and find that I love the 2nd and 3rd books in this series, as I would truly love to find other Christian Historical or writers that write about the Amish that I can continue to enjoy. Unfortunately, I read much faster than they write!
