Allie Rowbottom received her BA from New York University, her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and her PhD in Creative Writing and Literature from the University of Houston. Her work has received scholarships, essay prizes and honorable mentions from Tin House, Inprint, the Best American Essays series, the Florida Review, The Bellingham Review, the Black Warrior Review, The Southampton Review, and Hunger Mountain. This is, at rare times, a compelling read, however, the author’s desire to tell three separate stories - her complex family history, the historical context and relevancy of Jell-O, and the story of the Leroy girls - falls short on all three fronts. Which is too bad. I really wanted to like this book, but felt it never found a focus.The family sections are disjointed and difficult to follow - a few times jolting, and the story of the girls is more of an ongoing side note than a part of the whole I was expecting. Oddly, the bits about Jell-o were the most satisfying and could surely have provided a solid spine for the other bite, but that never materialized.

Nothing good happens to family 3/4 done with book and nothing good except a baby was born. They are truly cursed.You will learn how the jello you eat is not good for you. Chemicals and sugar. It is a true biography and no story to it. you wish it would end.

I was so excited to get this book, expecting it to be an interesting history of the rise of an iconic American food. Aside from the occasional mention of how the Jello empire came to exist, this book is nothing more than a poorly written, badly organized, depressing family saga. The author spends a good deal of the book extemporizing on her theory of feminism and blames her family disfunction on patriarchy...the whole thing is a waste of time and very dissapointing.

A rather strange family history. A wordy account which becomes boring.

From the mixed reviews you’ll likely note that this book has flaws and frankly there were times I was tempted to abandon it. The author is one of a line of heirs to the jello fortune and she weaves jello’s history with her family history. Part of what makes this book hard to read is the very detailed account of her mother’s struggle with cancer. Lore is that the Jello heirs are cursed, and that bears out in traumas, early deaths and mental illness. I found the author’s commentary on her theory of the cause — the silencing of women’s voices — quite interesting. This included observations about a form of modern day hysteria that hit Jello’s hometown of Le Roy. The book reminds me in some ways of Girl Interrupted, but that is much briefer and more readable. A more thorough edit with fewer of the details of her mom’s illness would have helped to boost my rating. I would recommend this, but know that it’s a family history and a downer at that. I’m going with a 4 but more of a 3.5.

It was a downer from beginning to end. Not an interesting story, If Jello hadn't been included in the lives of these people, there would still be no story. Jello just attracts readers.

The first half of the book was better than the second half, but overall fell flat. I really don’t feel like I learned a lot about the history of Jell-o unfortunately or the family that founded it. The second half of the book really became dull as the author went into all the psychoanalysis stuff and constantly blaming men for all the problems the women in this book encountered. It wouldn’t have been so bad but she just belabored this To the point of total boredom.

Having grown up in a small town in New England during the 60s and 70s, I have had my share of fancy molded jello salads, and I enjoyed the small town atmosphere and understood the deterioration when an employer leaves. It opened my mind to think about the hidden and subtle patriarchy women face everyday and how diminished they are made to feel. I didn’t enjoy as much the long passages about the terrible illness the author’s mother was forced to endure, but I see this book as a way for the author to free herself as well, and it was needed.
