About the Author
María Dueñas holds a PhD in English philology. After two decades in academia, she broke onto the literary scene in 2009 with the publication of the New York Times bestselling novel The Time in Between, followed by The Heart Has Its Reasons in 2012. Both novels became international bestsellers and have been translated into thirty-five languages. The television adaptation of The Time in Between earned critical and international acclaim. Las palabras fluyen sin esfuerzo de la pluma de MarÃa Dueñas y entrelazan una aventura hipnotizante de amor, esfuerzo y una vida vivida a lo lleno durante los peores tiempos en la historia de España. Và la serie y tuve que comprar el libro.The words flow effortlessly from MarÃa Dueña's pen and weave a mesmerizing adventure of love, struggle, and a life lived to its fullest during the worse times in Spain's history. I read the series and had to buy the book.
Maria Duenas does not disappoint (even hough this is her first and not her second novel). It is a shame that the review will be rejected if written in Spanish, because the book is full of idiomatic expressions that are of difficult translation, and the historical time it covers and the characters names, in good part real people, are not we;ll known by American readers, unless they ate buffs of the Spanish Civil War, the Franco dictatorship and/or WWII.Don't be discouraged, though; even if you are not in any of this groups, terse, clean prose, well developed plot, in-depth research make this a very enjoyable novel by one of the great group of Spanish women writers of the current generation.I will not go into the plot, and leave it to the enjoyment of the readers. My wife is readi, and enjoying the English translation.
This was an excellent, entertaining first novel by a relatively new and young author. Most importantly, it is beautifully written; I certainly hope Ms. Duenas has, or is working on, a second gem. To boot, this novel is available as a Spanish Kindle and in English (not sure if also as Kindle) as The Time in Between. The beautiful-writing is evident in Spanish, but I have had quite positive, consistent feedback from friends to whom I've recommended the English version.It reminded me of Mira Si Yo Te Querre, though only in that it involves a Spanish woman in the Sahara. The Duenas character is much more engaging, and the story is much more entertaining, even fascinating, although the ending was less-so to this reader. The author is an academic and this is evident in the well-researched, rich historical and geographic contexts she paints, and in which in which she grounds the life and times of Sira Quiroga and her fellow-travelers -matters that are often quite weak even with better-known and more-seasoned authors.Not surprisingly, the novel is being presented as an Antena 3 television series in Spain this year. See the reference at IMDB: at [...], and at Antena 3: at [...]. Really looking forward to watching this on Amazon Prime!! Almost as much as I anticipate a next Duenas novel.Gracias y felicitaciones, Profesora Duenas.
La trama de este libro es una mezcla, muy buena podrÃamos decir, de verdad histórica e imaginación. La narrativa abunda en detalles sobre la guerra civil en España, el exilio para muchos asà como la participación en la polÃtica de polÃticos como de espÃas. Para mi no ha sido una narrativa de esas que captura el ojo y el alma desde inicio hasta fin, sino más bien una de esas que en algunas partes nos induce a investigar detalles, momentos de la historia y en algunos casos a redefinir ideas al respecto. En algunos momentos del libro se siente que la trama no lleva un camino único, como que son diferentes voces las que presentan el relato, pero este aspecto se aminora ante la gran cantidad de detalles históricos que con esa lectura recibimos. En general, el libro es recomendado.... sin embargo, la serie televisiva, es mas que eso: resulta esencial para juzgar el libro.
LIbro ameno y de lectura rápida y fácil. La autora es una gran cuentista que combina lo que es producto de su imaginación con lo que ha investigado y estudiado. La trama cuadra perfectamente con los acontecimientos de la época. Siendo yo de América Latina, aprendí mucho sobre esa época tan difícil de la historia española y marroquí.
It is entertaining, and it was a best-seller. I am sure a lot of people will like it, a lot of friends of mine do like it- in my opinion, this book is full of stereotypes (about different people, periods, etc) and it is not well-written,even a little cheesey. But this is only my opinion. Also, there is the tv show you can watch on Netflix (I have not watched it because I wanted to read the book first).
Es una historia apasionante,muy bien escrito y mantiene el interes de principio a fin.Personajes bien estructurados,empaticos ,los giros inesperados te mantienen atenta y los escenarios distintos te llevan a distintos lugares y hechos historicos.Sin duda,para mi, es el mejor libro de la autora.
El tratar el tema de la guerra , los espÃas en la época franquista me parece muy inovador que el hilo conductor de la novela es a través de una diseñadora de modas y costurera además de ser mujer que interviene en decisiones muy importantes . Si me gusto mucho y el interés nunca decrece en la novela que es larga pero siempre encuentra la autora una forma de hacer que no se puede dejar la novela hasta leer el final , que no importa tanto sino toda la novela señala hechos históricos y personajes reales
