Starting in seventh grade, I read with keen interest the adventures of Horatio Hornblower by C. S. Forester. I hated that the series finally ended. Eventually, of course, Patrick O' Brian produced a somewhat similar naval adventure series. And now we have The Colonial Post Captain by Chris Durbin. Like the aforementioned series, this book seems to be well researched. In any case, it is entirely believable and quite gripping. I can barely wait for the next book in this series. I must mention, however, one objection that I have to this author's style of writing. He totally ignores the long-established convention of setting off nominatives of address with commas, rendering many of his sentences unbelievably confusing.

If you enjoy the age of sail and tales of the Royal Navy, don’t miss this book. The author has chosen a period in the history of the Royal Navy when its traditions of bravery and victory were forming, but not yet taken for granted. It is an interesting drama, involving the unfortunate Admiral Byng, the siege of Minorca, and life at sea and ashore.I read this book in one sitting, it’s that absorbing! I look forward to the rest of this series with great anticipation.

I was very pleased to discover a new series in the age of fighting sail set well before the Napoleonic period. This was well written, the characters are interesting, and I look forward to further novels developing them. The author shows a good understanding of the limitations of fighting under sail. And the downfall of poor Admiral Byng was a good focus, an important battle not often the subject of fiction.

Thank you, Mr. Durbin for an excellent sea yarn that promises to keep getting better as it traces the indomitable Capt. Carlisle through the revolution. An American captaining a Royal Naval warship - there's some internal conflict on that horizon! Very nicely developed characters, spouting believable dialogue with a clear period flavor that is not so encumbered by period idioms as to be confusing. In the upcoming books, I'm hopeful Mr. Durbin will give us a feel in greater detail of the hardships and realities of life aboard a 18th century square rigger. That's my only nit to pick.Highly recommended, I'm looking forward to the next installment!

One of my favourite genre is Naval Historic Fiction; and like most who would claim such, I have read about all that I can find in my decades of chasing ships. Well written, I enjoyed this novel from beginning to end. I applaud and admire Chris Durbin for his skill at creating a believable story that actually made since with his use of nautical terms, tactics and feel for a live ship beneath his feet.Aurora Wolf a Literary Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy

An excellent novel of the wooden ships and iron men genre. The Seven Years War naval campaign is not well covered in historical fiction. Most recommended

Whether you have read all of O'Brian, Forester and Lamdin or not, if you enjoy nautical fiction, you will almost certainly appreciate Mr. Durbin's excellent story. His characters are interesting and act according to the nature as ascribed to them, and he puts them into situations that have real stakes and uncertain outcomes. I hope the author has some surprises for us in upcoming installments. All in all, very well done.

Well written, direct story line and historically accurate Napoleonic era sailing novel. Book one of a newly written series (Book 2 is just available) that called to mind similar novels by Patrick O'Brien, Dewey Lambdin or Julian Stockwin whose series are almost matchless. A rousing good read that could have been just a bit longer.
